The Autistic Girl's Toolkit - Adult Disability Payment
Updated: Oct 2, 2024
Are you autistic and looking for quick and easy money to help you through life?
Then the Adult Disability Payment is for you.
The Adult Disability Payment is extra money each month if you have a disability incl. autism or a long-term health condition.
Crucially, it doesn't matter if you are working or not. Your income isn't taken into account. It remains with you even if you become unemployed.
The application process is quick and easy and not as demanding or invasive as PIP.
The payment is split into 2 parts:
daily living
mobility
You may qualify for the daily living part if you struggle with daily tasks.
You'll get either:
£72.65 a week for a standard award
£108.55 a week for an enhanced award
You may qualify for the mobility part if you need help with planning and following a journey, or moving around.
You’ll get either:
£28.70 a week for a standard award
£75.75 a week for an enhanced award
You can apply online or by phone or paper.
The application is split into 2 parts.
Part 1
Part 1 asks for your personal details including :
your date of birth and main address
your National Insurance number -
your bank account details
Part 2
Part 2 is a question and answer document that asks you about:
your condition and how it affects your ability to look after yourself, understand information, and communicate with other people
what help and support you need and why
how you move around outdoors
any medication, treatment or equipment you need
You'll need to give detailed answers to the questions that are relevant to you. Your answers decide how much you will receive each month.
A tip is to imagine yourself on your worst day and answer appropriately.
You need to provide a document from a professional that confirms your conditions, disability or needs. It does not need to include a diagnosis. It can include :
a letter from a professional
an official document, such as a prescription list, care plan, or a letter from your HR department about any workplace adjustments
You can also provide information that describes the impact the conditions or disability have on your life. This can be either:
a letter or phone call to Social Security Scotland from someone in your wider support network who knows you well (incl. family)
information from a professional that describes your needs (incl. GP)
You can send the supporting information with your application or you can send it within 28 days of submitting your part 2 application.
You have 2 weeks to complete part 1 and 8 weeks to complete part 2.
You can apply for ADP here : https://www.mygov.scot/adult-disability-payment/how-to-apply
Applicants should hear back relatively quickly.
Kat, a no.6 user stated " I get ADP. It is a lifesaver. I did the application form online and got my family to talk to Social Security Scotland on my behalf. I also sent in a letter from my GP. I use the money to help get around and to help pay for my rent. "
Julie, an autistic woman in Edinburgh stated " The ADP application process was very straightforward and compared to PIP they were much nicer. "
The adult disability payment is an extremely essential component of the autistic girl's toolkit as it provides a form of financial security all year round and can be used for anything including rent.
